When you go on Facebook and see all the people on it how do you know they are who they say they are. No one could meet someone on Facebook and only talk on the phone without Skyping them or ever seeing them in person right? Well it happened in the movie Catfish with a guy named Nev who meets a girl who sent him paintings of his photos. He gets in contact with her on Facebook and starts to talk to her. Nev meets this girl’s sister on Facebook and they hit it off. They txt and talk on the phone a lot and they begin to have a long distance relationship without ever having met. They didn’t even Skype ever. After a while he decides he has to go and surprise her because all of the plans he’s made have fallen through. Once he goes to look for her he gets many different surprises.
The movie Catfish is filmed, directed and edited by Nev Schulman, his brother Ariel and friend Henry Joost in New York. The people in the movie are the ones that filmed it and Abby and Angela Pierce. The movie was made in 2008. It takes place at first in New York City and then they go to Michigan to surprise Megan. Nev starts to figure out that there is something wrong, but he keeps going for the sake of the documentary. When they start to go to Michigan they find out even more that it isn’t really true.
Nev is a Photographer and one day he gets a package of a painting of one of his photos. He gets on Facebook and finds out that it is a little girl painting her name is Abby. He also gets in touch with her mom who is Angela. Then he meets Abby’s older half-sister named Megan and he starts to like her and they talk on the phone and eventually become in a relationship. She says she wrote him a song. Nev listens to it and likes it but later finds out that it is by someone else on YouTube. He tries to plan times when they meet up, but the plans keep falling through so Nev eventually decides to go and surprise her. When he gets there he finds out that a lot of other things she has said were lies. Once he actually meets her he finds out a big surprise.
The time when Angela admits everything to Nev and explains how she built her web of lies. It was very interesting even though I had mostly figured it out by this point in the movie. It was very interesting that even when she was caught she still lied a little bit and said that Megan was a real girl and was actually in rehab which was a lie. When she told all of the different ways she kept from getting caught. I think it’s really funny how the husband is completely clueless and doesn’t know what’s going on. If it happened with me and I saw it in a movie that my wife had an affair I would be completely pissed off.
I thought the movie was great. If it was actually a real documentary and they didn’t fake it, it is awesome not only that this happened but that it was recorded and followed. The title catfish means that there are some people in the world who are catfish and keep everyone else on their toes. The girl in the movie, Angela was one of these catfishes. The movie relates to what we’ve learned in this class showing that now with all the media and social things we don’t even have to go anywhere to meet someone hundreds of miles away. A lesson that can be learned from this movie is meeting someone in person before you start to date them. Essentially you need to just not be a dumb ass.Sampers, Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14348846384922697285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3726696423029855470.post-88513557672357370662011-01-20T07:09:00.000-08:002011-01-20T07:15:15.601-08:00catfish day twoThis lady is very obviously really messed up. She also has to be really smart to set up this whole web of lies. She must have spent tons and tons of time on facebook with different accounts. This would be a really entertaining trip except for the fact that the hot girl you thought you were having a relationship with is really an old ugly married mother.Sampers, Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14348846384922697285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3726696423029855470.post-29556532854670832502011-01-07T07:07:00.000-08:002011-01-07T07:09:25.178-08:00Photoshop<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtEEIM2BgxqEXJJN45jdmgDw0_hAceQ5cDOuX8nbsvKJtoQJcTcjrIrT9cGJh3Db3p7WEdHFtoSiKgCi1aMlUmqmnahe63agRI_Ym3rvTdSogyD_o8Hf_xhBn7LbhtP8m7lQTnoOxM8Wk/s400/play.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5559461302289123426" />Sampers, Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14348846384922697285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3726696423029855470.post-90476059875691346702010-12-23T07:03:00.001-08:002010-12-23T07:03:50.622-08:00Sampers, Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14348846384922697285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3726696423029855470.post-51271558479889228172010-12-17T21:27:00.005-08:002010-12-17T21:29:45.933-08:00Social MediaThere are many good things that have come from social media, but there are also lots of bad
things that come from it also. Social media has expanded to many different types of media and plenty of
different groups.

One of the good things that has come from social media is the exponential increase in
connectivity. No matter where you are or what you’re doing, there is some way of communicating with
who you need to. Unless of course you have no service or internet. But having no internet or service is
almost impossible now that the phone and internet networks have become the norm in just about every
business that you walk past. Just try to find a WiFi network while you are walking down the street some
day and you will see that there are probably five to ten networks already in reach of you. If you are on
the road and you suddenly remember that you forgot to look up what homework you had, you simply
pull out your wireless device and push the Facebook button and you are instantly connected to a bunch
of students that are there to answer your homework questions.

One of the bad things about social media is the decrease in face to face social interaction. There
are many useful types of social media that involve face time, but these are still not perfect and it is
definitely not the primary type of media. Anytime you type or say something online there is always the
chance that it will be interpreted wrong, or misunderstood the way that it would be otherwise if you
were face to face. There is also that time where you get to think about exactly what you want to say
before you say it which you don’t get to do when having a face to face conversation.

Another one of the bad things about social media is the anonymousness of the internet. One of
the dumbest things on the internet is Formspring. They honestly should change the name of the website
to Cyber bully me please.com with a subtitle or occasionally brown nose. It is an anonymous website
where anyone can type anything that they want to say to you and be completely anonymous. A lot of the
time it’s just a bunch of people posting mean things that they want to say to you anonymously, or they
just like to be assholes. There is rarely a time where someone actually in nice to you.

Another one of the good things about social media is the ability to transfer what you’re doing on
the internet into real life. There are so many times when you can talk to someone on a social media site
as an icebreaker or just a continuation of a conversation before. Any time that someone would want to
have a party or get-together there is a way that they could get to everyone that they want to come
without calling on the phone. I would have liked it more if it weren't so annoying. I thought that it was stupid that Julia didn't like what Julie was doing. I think its really funny that people get fired because of blogs. If they are dumb enought to smash their job on a public site that anyone can see, they probably shouldn't have that job. A good way to vent about your job other than to blog about it is to talk to your real living friends. You could also just do what the guy in office space did and burn down your work. That is probably a very drastic solution. But in my opinion it would be at least more creative than writing about it on a blog.Sampers, Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14348846384922697285noreply@blogger.com0
